Bangladesh was Elected as a Member of the Council of IMO

Dhaka: Bangladesh has been elected as a Council member in the C category of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Bangladesh achieved a significant victory in this highly competitive category for the first time, securing 128 votes during the election held at the IMO headquarters in London. This information was revealed by the Bangladesh High Commission in London on Saturday (December 2).

Saida Muna Tasneem, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the IMO and the UK, mentioned that with 40 members in the International Maritime Organization’s Council, Bangladesh’s election as a member in the C category reflects the confidence of the country and the international maritime community. She stated that this victory is a testament to Bangladesh as a maritime nation and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s astute leadership.

The Bangladesh High Commission in the UK and the Permanent Representative to the IMO, Saida Muna Tasneem, expressed gratitude to the members of the IMO for electing Bangladesh as a Council member. She conveyed appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Shipping of Bangladesh.

Saida Muna Tasneem expressed gratitude for the bold decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to contest the IMO Council election in 2023. Prior to this, Saida Muna Tasneem was unanimously elected as the Vice-Chair of the 33rd Assembly of the IMO. It is noteworthy that there are 175 member countries in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
