The High Court has ordered the formation of a high-powered committee to investigate the increase in the prices of potato, onion-eggs and other agricultural products.
Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md. Atabullah High Court ordered with the bench rule.
Rule sought to know why the failure to provide market infrastructure and market management at the place of production would not be illegal as per (4)(g) of the Agricultural Marketing Act, 2018. At the same time, the ruling also sought to know why the inaction and failure of the defendants to prevent the increase in the price of agricultural products would not be illegal.
In the writ, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and the Department of Agriculture have been made defendants.
A report was published in a daily on December 26 under the title of ‘Silent authorities are cheating consumers by buying products: A kilo of potato has increased by Tk 15’. Adding to the report, the writ was filed against the inaction in establishing market infrastructure in the agricultural production area by implementing the provisions of 4(g) of the Agricultural Marketing Act including potato, onion and price control.
Supreme Court lawyer Manoj Kumar Bhowmik filed the writ.
