The Ethiopian army and the Tigre People’s Revolutionary Force (TPLF) have been fighting for a long time over the occupation of Tigre. The air force bombed a busy market area in the town of Togo in Tigre on Wednesday. Witnesses claim at least 43 people have been killed. News from AP, AFP and Reuters.
Allegedly, the road from the capital of Tigre to the city was blocked by the army. As a result, no ambulance could go.
An eyewitness said, “Many people were injured in this incident. Many are seriously injured.”
“I have to walk on blood,” he told AFP. His own home was also destroyed in the airstrikes.
An Ethiopian military spokesman said, no ambulance had been stopped. However, he did not say whether there was an airstrike or not.
The European Union (EU) has said in a statement that the airstrikes were “of grave concern”. And if the ambulance blocking the road is true, then it is a tragedy. It is against the Geneva Conventions. “
The conflict in Tigre began last November. The TPLF then attacked the army base. The TPLF is the ruling party in the region. The TPLF had alleged that the Prime Minister was in power illegally after the vote was canceled due to Corona last year. Then came the army operation in Tigre. That fight is still going on.
Ethiopia voted last Monday to elect a new government. The count is still going on. However, the people of Tigre could not take part in that vote.
