We have seized power to stop the civil war: Coup General

The government has been overthrown to prevent a civil war in Sudan, said General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the country’s military chief.

General Abdel Fattah stated this at a press conference on Tuesday local time.

Qatari-based Al Jazeera reports that military members arrested several ministers, including Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk, on Monday. The army then took over the country by dismissing the cabinet.

After taking power, he came to the press conference and tried to reduce the anger and anxiety of the people. At the time, he said, power would soon be returned to the civilian administration.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said, “We have moved to disband the cabinet and take control of the country because of the dangerous activities we have witnessed in the country in the last week.” Otherwise, there was a danger of civil war in the country.

There have been large-scale protests in Sudan this week demanding the transfer of power to a civilian government. Some members of the cabinet took part there.

“We assure the Sudanese people and the world that all these steps have been taken as part of the transfer of power and that the transfer of power to the civilian administration will be ensured,” he said.

In 2019, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was ousted from power by the military and civilian groups. They have ruled Sudan ever since.

In September of this year, military officials following Omar al-Bashir tried to overthrow him but failed. Since then, tensions have risen in the country.

In that incident, the military and civilian parts of the government were divided. There was a crisis of confidence between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Abdel Fattah spoke on television, announcing a state of emergency in Sudan on Monday.
