Awami League Visit’s Sheikh Kamal’s tomb

Today is the 74th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this occasion, the central leaders of Awami League paid their respects at his tomb.

Obaidul Quader visited Sheikh Kamal’s tomb at Banani Cemetery on Saturday (05 August) at 8:45 am. At this time, the leaders of the party prayed for the forgiveness of the souls of those killed on August 15, including Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nashim and other central leaders were present there.

Earlier in the morning, General Secretary of the party Obaidul Quader paid tribute to the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal installed in the premises of Abahani Club in Dhanmondi.

Later, affiliated and fraternal organizations of Awami League including Jubo League, Krishak League, Mahila League, Jubo Mahila League, Volunteer League, Chhatra League and various social and political organizations paid tribute to the portrait of Sheikh Kamal.

The 74th birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one of the organizers of the Liberation War and a sports and cultural figure, is on Saturday (05 August).

He was born on this day in 1949 in Tungipara village of then Gopalganj subdivision. On the night of August 15, 1975, he was martyred at the age of 26 by the merciless bullets of a group of misguided army officers.

Various sports and socio-cultural organizations including Awami League have taken programs to celebrate the day. Korankhani, Milad and Doa Mahfil will be held.

Shaheed Sheikh Kamal completed secondary school from Shaheen School and higher secondary from Dhaka College and passed BA Honors from Department of Sociology, Dhaka University. He was a student of the sitar department of ‘Chayanot’, one of the sources of education in the field of art, literature and culture in Bangladesh. He was the founder of Abahani Krirachakra, the pioneer of modern football in Bangladesh, one of the best sports organizations in the subcontinent. Moreover, he was one of the founders of Dhaka Theatre.

Besides, he was very enthusiastic in various sports including football, cricket, hockey, basketball since childhood. Sheikh Kamal was trained in the first war course of independent Bangladesh, got commissioned in the Liberation Army and served as the ADC of General Osmani, the chief commander of the Liberation War.

After independence, Sheikh Kamal was discharged from the army and concentrated on education. He was a member of the Bangladesh Chhatra League Central Executive and at the time of his martyrdom was a member of the Central Committee of the National Chhatra League, an organ of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League. He was an MA final exam candidate of Sociology department.
