In Peru, at least 24 people have died when a bus veered off a mountain road.

The accident occurred on Monday around 1:30 PM local time. The bus was traveling from the Ayacucho region in southern-central Peru towards the capital of the Junin region, Huancayo.

Local media reports suggest that the bus, while navigating a treacherous mountain path near Huancavelica, had overturned multiple times. The mayor of the Anco district, Manuel Geovanni Paucar Pacchioni, mentioned that the bus had fallen at least 150 meters (492 feet) below.

The regional government of Ayacucho reported that they have provided medical care to 11 injured passengers at the Huancavelica Hospital. There are concerns that the number of injured individuals may be as high as 36, according to La Republica newspaper.

The Peruvian transportation authority, SUTRAN, issued a statement on Monday expressing condolences for the victims and pledging to investigate the cause of the accident.
