Bangladesh wants closer relations with Maldives: Chief Adviser

Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus held a meeting with the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muijju. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session on Friday local time. At this time Dr. emphasized on close relations with Maldives. Yunus.

During the talks, the two leaders discussed ways to expand trade, investment, tourism, SAARC activation, climate change research cooperation and people-to-people ties. The chief adviser called for ‘closer’ ties with the Maldives, saying the two countries shared many things, including the serious impact of climate change.

Referring to the danger posed by the climate crisis, Professor Yunus said, ‘Our entire existence is at risk.’ The President of Maldives praised the role of Bangladeshi workers in the country’s construction and tourism sectors.

Mohamed Muijju said both countries can work together on tourism, fisheries and climate change research. He called for expanding trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The President of Maldives said, “If our two countries work together, it will be beneficial for the people of both countries.”

The Chief Adviser said he would like to see SAARC activism as a platform for economic cooperation and closer integration of the South Asian region. He said, ‘We will stay close. We shouldn’t be far away.’
