A resolution calling for a solution to the Rohingya crisis has been unanimously passed by the UN Human Rights Council. Emphasis has been placed on accountability for the Rohingya people in Myanmar, justice for their persecution and repatriation.
The resolution on Rohingya was passed at the 47th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva at the initiative of Bangladesh, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) presented a resolution on the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar.
According to a statement from the UN Bangladesh Mission in Geneva, this is the first time since the Rohingyas took refuge in Bangladesh in 2017 that a resolution has been passed at the UN without a vote. The proposal has been described as a ‘big milestone’ for Bangladesh.
The proposal praised the government of Bangladesh for providing shelter to the Rohingya people
The resolution calls for the prosecution of those accused of all forms of torture, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including sexual offenses against the Rohingya, to be brought under national, regional and international justice and for the investigation process to be strengthened. The International Criminal Court and the ongoing trial at the International Court of Justice are also supported
In this regard, the ambassador Mostafizur Rahman said, “We have made every effort at all levels from the very beginning to get all the parties to agree. In the end, no state has opposed the resolution, which is a major achievement of Bangladesh’s diplomacy. “
“On the one hand, we have been able to convince the OIC states that the resolution must have the realities of a political context,” he said. On the other hand, we have asked the western countries to agree on human rights issues.
Mostafizur Rahman called on the international community to play an active role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and protecting their human rights at the UN and sending the Rohingya back to the country with full security.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have taken refuge in Bangladesh since 2017 after suffering genocide and horrific torture in Myanmar.
