Modern technology being added to marine fishing boats: Rezaul

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim yesterday said modern technology is being inserted to all sea-going fishing boats so that those could be located while fishing in the sea.

Talking to reporters after inauguration of a seaweed fair here, he said registration has been made mandatory for all marine vessels.

“Modern technology is being installed at all sea-going fishing boats. Applying those, the location of fishing vessels could be known in the sea,” Rezaul said.

As a result, fishing trawlers will stop going illegally to the sea, he said, assuring that the government would provide all kinds of assistance if the fishermen fall in accidents while fishing legally.

He added that the government is discouraging illegal fishing in deep sea.

Replying to a query, the fisheries and livestock minister said Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in fish.

Noting that the Department of Fisheries is implementing a project to catch tuna fish from the sea, he said there is a huge demand of Bangladesh’s fish in at least 90 countries.

Once the Padma Bridge is inaugurated, Rezaul said, fish processing and packaging industries will be set up in the southern of the country and then fish and fish products could be exported to many countries of the world.
