155 earthquakes in 24 hours in Japan, 24 dead

At least 24 people have been reported killed in yesterday’s (January 1) earthquake in Japan. The JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) reported at least 155 earthquakes in just a few hours that day.

The JMA says the most powerful of the earthquakes measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. Several earthquakes were felt on Tuesday morning local time, JMA said.

According to local Japanese media, almost all of the 155 earthquakes were above magnitude 3 on the Richter scale. At least 13 people were killed when several buildings collapsed due to the strong earthquake. About 33,000 homes were left without power in the earthquake-hit Ishikawa Prefecture. Several people died in fires caused by electrical sparks during the earthquake, according to local media Japan Times.

Before this, this terrible earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck Japan’s Noto region at around 4:10 pm on Monday. Immediately after the earthquake, the local administration officials issued a tsunami warning. Initially, however, the magnitude of the earthquake was said to be 7.4.

Due to the intensity of the earthquake, its tremors were also felt from the country’s capital, Tokyo. Within 10 minutes of the earthquake, a 12-foot-high wave hit Wajima Port in Ishikawa Prefecture.
