Jagannath University Vice Chancellor Imdadul Haque is no more

Jagannath University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Imdadul Haq, has passed away. He succumbed to illness early on Saturday at a private hospital in the capital (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). The information has been confirmed by the university’s treasurer, Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed.

Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed stated that Professor Imdadul Haq passed away at five in the morning. His body will be brought to the university campus at 10 a.m. The funeral prayer will be held at the Central Jame Mosque of the university at 11 a.m.

Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed expressed deep condolences on behalf of the university family at the demise of Professor Imdadul Haq.

In September, Professor Imdadul Haq was diagnosed with cancer. On September 12, he went to Singapore for advanced treatment. There, he underwent radiotherapy. After significant improvement in his physical condition, he returned to the country on October 12.

According to university sources, Professor Imdadul Haq was a botanist. He was a professor in the Department of Botany at Dhaka University. He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University for a four-year term from June 1, 2021.

Professor Imdadul Haq was born in Pabna district. He earned his MSc in 1978 and a PhD in 1988 from the Department of Botany at Dhaka University. He conducted multiple post-doctoral researches in Germany and the United States.

He served in various significant roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Dhaka University, Vice President and Member of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association, Treasurer of the Bangladesh Botanical Society, and General Editor of the Bangladesh Association for Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology.

He published more than 80 research articles in various national and international journals.

The passing of Professor Imdadul Haq is a significant loss for the academic community in Bangladesh.
