Raj Bhavan is being monitored, West Bengal Governor complains

The Governor of West Bengal, C. V. Anand Bose, has raised allegations of surveillance against him. The governor alleges that he is being “spied upon,” including monitoring his entire communication infrastructure, which is considered unlawful. The matter has drawn the attention of the relevant authorities.

In an interview given to a news agency in India on Tuesday, the governor raised these allegations amidst the ongoing political conflict with the ruling Trinamool Congress government in the state. Although he did not specifically mention the Trinamool government, he claimed that there is “credible information” about spying at the Raj Bhavan (Governor’s House) in Kolkata. He stated, “This is a fact. I have credible information about surveillance at Raj Bhavan. The matter has been brought to the attention of the concerned authorities. I will await the outcome.”

In the interview, the governor claimed that there is “reliable information” regarding surveillance at Raj Bhavan related to “snooping.” However, he did not provide details about who might be behind the alleged snooping. Conducting surveillance on any citizen without specific directions from the judiciary is not permissible in the constitutional framework of the country.

Previously, allegations of this kind have been made against various individuals in India, especially those in prominent professional positions. However, the governor’s accusations come at a time when there is an ongoing administrative dispute between the state government and the governor in West Bengal.

Governor Anand Bose has a history of active involvement in state politics, expressing his opinions on various issues. The recent tensions and disputes between the state government and the governor have created multiple administrative challenges in West Bengal. Earlier this month, the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Biman Banerjee, had informed that at least 22 bills passed by the Legislative Assembly have not received the governor’s approval, hindering government actions.

The situation is now under close scrutiny, and with new allegations brought forward, the dynamics between the state government, the governor, and the central government are being closely watched.
