Canada wants ‘private’ talks with India

Canada is seeking a joint discussion with India to conclude diplomatic efforts. Local time on Tuesday, Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, made this statement. In Canada, they had informed India that they had requested the expulsion of their 41 workers on the same day. They have been instructed to leave by October 10th.

However, Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau or Joly, has not made any comments on this matter. This news has been published by the Financial Times citing relevant sources in the Indian government.

Canada’s Foreign Minister stated, “We maintain communication with the Indian government. We will preserve diplomatic communication through diplomatic channels. Keeping diplomatic discussions confidential is of utmost importance.”

Hardeep Singh, the leader of the Khalistan Movement, is excited about declaring Punjab in India as a separate independent state. From India’s perspective, he is viewed as a ‘militant’ and ‘separatist’. On June 18, he was killed in an encounter with terrorists outside Gurudwara.

Recently, Trudeau participated in a debate in the Canadian Parliament where he stated that Indian agents were involved in Hardeep’s assassination. This statement has been considered ‘baseless and motivated’ by the Indian government. They have emphasized that the Canadian government has not provided any evidence to support their claim against India.

This issue has escalated tensions between Canada and India. Both countries have taken reciprocal measures, including suspending visa issuance and halting trade discussions. According to the Financial Times, there are 62 Canadian diplomatic workers in India. Among them, 41 have been instructed to leave by October 10th. Otherwise, diplomatic privileges for their own personnel have been revoked, which has surprised New Delhi. On September 22, it was announced that new visas for Canadian citizens would not be issued.
