Akram-Misbah’s ‘talk show’ wins hearts of Indians

The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry sparks intense emotions, and even in the recent One Day International World Cup, the clash between these two nations was surrounded by excitement. While the on-field game was gripping, there was a notable deviation in the form of a talk show named ‘The Pavilion’ on a Pakistani television channel called ‘A Sports’.

Familiar cricket faces of Pakistan—Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Shoaib Malik—were regular analysts on this show. They dissected the matches from the start of the World Cup, analyzing games beforehand and even after they ended. However, their discussions weren’t limited to on-field events alone.

Apart from personal anecdotes and light-hearted comments, they also delved into various conspiracy theories and analytical interpretations. Notably, they offered their own responses to the numerous allegations raised against the host country India. Even the criticisms of former cricketers from their own country didn’t deter Akram, Younis, and the others from offering their impartial views.

Despite the inherent divisive nature of the India-Pakistan rivalry, Akram and company’s impartial stance has won over the hearts of Indian fans as well. A cricket enthusiast from Bangalore, Shubhann Nair, mentioned, “They offer a lot of in-depth analysis and discussions. They talk about where a team is going wrong and also discuss their own team. They praise those who perform well, regardless of the team.”

Wasim Akram, a fast bowler and commentator, was particularly seen as the most unbiased amid the discussions. He attributed their discussions to professionalism and an insightful perspective, saying, “We call a spade a spade here. There’s nothing personal. Everything is based on professionalism and an insightful perspective.”

The event commenced with the T20 World Cup and garnered widespread popularity. However, the India-Pakistan ODI in this World Cup seemed to transcend boundaries in terms of its popularity. When asked why it’s so popular, Akram mentioned, “Here, we sit together, enjoy each other’s company, and have a lot of fun. My belief is that people also enjoy it.”

Addressing the popularity of the show beyond their own countries, Akram stated, “We have mutual respect for each other. We make a lot of jokes. If we can show people at the end of the day that it’s just a game, then that’s fantastic.”

This show gained immense popularity, with an Indian viewer named Abhishek Mukherjee stating, “This World Cup will be remembered most for ‘The Pavilion’ on ‘A Sports’ from Pakistan.”

Many Indian viewers expressed their love for the event’s videos and comments, highlighting their affection through social media. At the same time, even many Pakistanis have shown reciprocal love and appreciation.

Before this, Pakistan’s former cricketer Hasan Raza alleged foul play against India, to which Akram responded, “I have been reading about this for a few days. Whatever they’re eating, I want that too. They’re out of their minds. They’re humiliating their own selves and presenting a bad picture to the world.” Akram further elaborated on how comments are chosen, and similarly, Shoaib Malik also emphasized that it’s inappropriate to discuss such matters.

Despite the tensions between India and Pakistan, ‘The Pavilion’ offered a unique platform where cricket discussions transcended borders, winning the hearts of fans from both nations.
