In Mongla, six thousand sacks of government rice, along with a bulkhead named ‘MV Safiya’, have sunk.

In Mongla of Bagerhat, a bulkhead named ‘MV Safiya’ sank with six thousand sacks of government rice.

On Sunday (March 31) afternoon, the bulkhead sank in the Tri-Mohona of the Pasur River in Mongla, named ‘MV Shahzada-6’, due to a collision with a lighter vessel.

However, no casualties occurred at that time. The five sailors on board have been rescued alive in an injured condition.

Meanwhile, in connection with the collision, the lighter vessel named ‘MV Shahzada-6’ has been detained by the navy police on Sunday evening.

On Monday morning, six thousand sacks of government rice, weighing 180 metric tons, were unloaded from the government food warehouse in Khulna and brought to the Mongla food warehouse aboard a bulkhead named ‘MV Safiya’. The rice was being brought for the poor and needy on the occasion of Eid.

Sayed Fakrul Islam, the in-charge of Mongla Coast Guard, said the lighter vessel ‘MV Shahzada-6’ has been detained on Sunday night. So far, the task of salvaging the sunken bulkhead or the lighter vessel has not begun. However, the work of lifting the sunken bulkhead with government rice will start from Monday morning, according to the navy police officer.
