Bangladesh joined the ‘global call’ in deep sea research

Foreign Minister Dr. A. K Abdul Momen called on the international community to prioritize financial and technical assistance to climate-vulnerable countries in deep-sea scientific research. In a high-level meeting related to deep sea scientific research organized at the United Nations headquarters, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Momen called.

On Wednesday (September 20), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the high-level meeting was held at the United Nations headquarters jointly organized by Bangladesh, Argentina and the International Seabed Authority. Foreign Minister Dr. welcomed the meeting. A. K. Abdul Momen, International Seabed Authority Secretary General Michael W. Lodge and Tongan Foreign Minister Fekitamola Utoikamanu. Prime Minister of Cook Islands Mark Brown delivered the keynote speech at the meeting. Ministers, ambassadors and diplomats of several countries were present in the meeting.

The meeting was organized to discuss in detail how the international community can accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Development Goals through deep sea scientific research.

Foreign Minister Dr. Momen said in his speech, deep sea biodiversity, its resources and environmental management can play an important role in achieving the United Nations development goals. This is why we need to carry out necessary research activities to ensure the sustainable use of deep sea biodiversity and its resources.

The foreign minister also said that the deep sea plays an important role in controlling our climate. Hence the importance of scientific research in the sustainable management of these deep seas is immense.

At the event, Bangladesh and other participating countries joined a ‘Global Call’ on deep sea scientific research. Through this initiative, the international community is requested to take action on scientific research and information on deep sea issues, among other things, to increase investments in the deep sea.
