The declaration of not giving weapons to Ukraine by Poland

Russia has been conducting aggression in Ukraine for over a year and a half. In response to this aggression, the United States and European countries, including Poland, have been supplying weapons to Ukraine. However, Poland, a known ally of Ukraine, has now announced that it will no longer supply weapons.

The decision is primarily related to the controversy over Ukrainian grain imports. Polish Prime Minister has stated that instead of supplying weapons, Poland will focus on providing Ukraine with modern military equipment. This decision has caused a rift between the two traditionally strong allies.

The issue of Ukrainian grain imports has caused tensions between the two countries, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky summoning the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland following the Polish Prime Minister’s announcement.

Prior to this, three neighboring countries – Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary – had already faced sanctions from the World Trade Organization (WTO) for imposing restrictions on Ukrainian grain imports. Russia’s aggression has intensified these tensions, as the need for grain imports has risen significantly in Eastern Europe due to the conflict.

The European Commission, as the executive body of the European Union, has repeatedly stated that members of the EU bloc cannot take individual actions or decisions outside the bloc’s trade policy. However, Budapest, Warsaw, and Bratislava have rejected the European Commission’s decision and announced their own trade bans on Ukrainian grain imports.

Poland’s decision to maintain its stance against Ukrainian grain imports is seen as crucial for their own agricultural interests. They argue that these restrictions protect their farmers from the impact of cheaper Ukrainian-produced grain flooding local markets.

Ukraine’s Finance Minister, Serhiy Marchenko, stated, “It is extremely important for us to prove that (outside the European Commission’s decision), EU member states cannot separately ban Ukrainian goods. That is why we are filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against these three countries (Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary).”

Poland has been a significant supporter of Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression, providing military assistance and even promising to supply Leopard 2 battle tanks manufactured by Germany. However, the announcement of no longer supplying weapons marks a shift in their policy.

In addition to military support, Poland has also provided refuge to over 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees who have fled Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression.
